The municipal library of Herencia has been recognized with the prestigious María Moliner Reading Award, along with 12 other libraries in the province of Ciudad Real, for their outstanding efforts in promoting reading. This award, granted by the Ministry of Culture through the Subdirectorate General for the Promotion of Books, Reading, and Spanish Literature, recognizes projects that encourage reading habits in municipalities with fewer than 50,000 inhabitants.
The “María Moliner” call for proposals, in which a total of 370 projects from across the country were selected, aims to stimulate the implementation of reading promotion activities, especially in small towns. Each awarded project, including Herencia’s, will receive a grant of 2,777.77 euros, intended for the acquisition of book collections to enrich their library collections and continue to encourage access to reading.
Along with Herencia, the awarded municipalities in the province of Ciudad Real include Alcázar de San Juan, Carrión de Calatrava, Carrizosa, Malagón, Manzanares, Pedro Muñoz, Piedrabuena, Poblete, Tomelloso, Torre de Juan Abad, Villahermosa, and Villarta de San Juan. In total, the grant awarded to libraries in the province amounts to 36,111 euros.
The Government delegate expressed satisfaction at the recognition given to so many municipal libraries in Ciudad Real, pointing out that these awards are a reflection of the municipalities’ efforts in favor of culture and education. “These awards highlight the work of our municipalities in promoting culture and reading, contributing to the development of a more educated and participative society,” he said. He also encouraged localities to continue promoting initiatives that foster a reading habit, especially among the younger generations.
The recognition received by the Herencia library reinforces the town’s commitment to promoting culture and education, positioning it as a reference in the field of reading promotion in the province. With this grant, the library will be able to acquire new titles and continue to be a space for learning and growth for residents of all ages.
