Clara Eugenia Úbeda-Contreras designs the poster for the “Saturday of the Anxious” 2023 at the Herencia Carnival.

Clara Eugenia Úbeda-Contreras Díaz-Pacheco, a young artist from Herencia, has been chosen this year to create, completely altruistically, the poster for the Sábado de los Ansiosos (Saturday of the Anxious) of the Carnival of Herencia 2023, a festival that marks the official start of one of the oldest carnivals in Spain, but also full of freshness and spontaneity, something that the author of the poster clearly portrays in her work.

On this occasion, the poster is a watercolor depicting a crowd of people dressed in costumes, with their arms raised, eagerly celebrating the arrival of the most anticipated festival in town, which marks the start of a few days filled with excitement, color, joy, abandon, and fun. The poster is young, fresh, and, above all, colorful, just like the night of the Saturday of the Anxious, when a multitude of people from the town, as well as from the surrounding area, gather to celebrate the arrival of a new “Herencian Year” by eating the twelve “ugautreras”, made from one of the most typical sweets of the Herencia Carnival and parodying the start of New Year’s and the traditional twelve grapes, which this year will take place in the vicinity of Plaza Cervantes on Saturday, February 11, starting at 11:30 p.m.

Furthermore, the poster pays homage to one of the most beloved carnival figures from Herencia, the giants who open the carnival processions and parades in Herencia. They are featured as the backdrop for the stage towards which the crowd is facing, clearly suggesting that in Herencia we eagerly await the arrival of this day that marks the official start and opening of the Carnival.

The Carnival is the quintessential festival of Herencia, with countless identifying characteristics that fuse its profane spirit with the halo of the religion of the Offertory of Souls. Tradition and modernity merge to give way to the spontaneity, creativity, strength, and freshness of youth, who embrace this centuries-old festival as their own.

For years, the organizers of the “Sábado de los Ansiosos,” who are committed to local culture and art, have suggested that the authorship of the poster announcing this day be given to artists from the town or related to it. Following this practice, Clara Eugenia Úbeda-Contreras Díaz-Pacheco, who has ideated and created the poster for the Sábado de los Ansiosos 2023 without expecting anything in return, has shown publicly her work and artistic qualities, promoting and highlighting the artwork of young local artists.

Clara Eugenia is a young artist who, after graduating in Arts from the School of Arts of Tomelloso, is currently in her second year of the Fine Arts degree at the Polytechnic University of Valencia. Despite her youth, she has already participated in several exhibitions of young artists in the province of Ciudad Real or at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Valencia. In addition, she has already won several awards, such as the first prize of the VIII Contest of Literary Portraits organized by the School of Arts and Superior Design of Tomelloso or the first competition of illustrated micro-stories in Villarta de San Juan.
