A violent incident has marred the celebrations of the patron saint festivities in Herencia, Ciudad Real. A 23-year-old young man fell victim to an assault in the early hours of Sunday, which led to his hospitalization and has raised concerns among the residents of the town.
According to reports from the emergency service 112, the events took place shortly before 9:00 in the morning on Parque de Herencia street. The victim, whose identity has not been revealed, suffered a beating that required immediate medical attention.
Upon receiving the notification, an emergency medical team from the local health center quickly responded to the scene. Given the seriousness of the injuries, the presence of a mobile ICU was requested to transfer the wounded young man to the General Hospital Mancha Centro in Alcázar de San Juan.
The incident occurred amidst the local festivities in honor of the Virgen de las Mercedes, an event that usually attracts numerous visitors and creates a festive atmosphere in the town.
This event has brought back memories of a tragic incident that occurred in 2018, when Gonzalo Buján lost his life violently in the vicinity of where the current assault took place. That incident, involving a carnival worker during the carnival celebrations, resulted in a three-year prison sentence for the aggressor, confirmed by the Supreme Court in February 2023.
The Civil Guard has taken charge of the investigation to clarify the circumstances surrounding the assault. Authorities urge any witnesses to provide information that may help identify those responsible for this violent act.
This incident has caused concern in the local community, tarnishing their festivities with an act of unjustified violence. Municipal authorities and festival organizers are evaluating additional security measures to prevent future similar incidents and ensure the peace of mind of the citizens during the celebrations.
