Call to action against plastic - Herencia (Ciudad Real) Spain

Call to action against plastic

In commemoration of World Environment Day, celebrated on June 5th, Herencia has shone a green light of awareness. The town’s windmills will be illuminated in green, a symbolic gesture by the Herencia City Council to highlight the importance of protecting our ecosystems and promoting respect for the environment.

World Environment Day was established by the United Nations (UN) in 1972, and since then, every June 5th is dedicated to intensifying attention and political action around environmental issues. It is an opportunity for people worldwide to become active agents in sustainable and equitable development. The main objective is to encourage a change in attitude towards environmental issues and cooperation for a sustainable environment.

This day is known for a series of activities that take place worldwide: street rallies, eco-concerts, poster competitions in schools and colleges, tree plantings, recycling and cleaning campaigns, among others. In many countries, this event also leads to the signing or ratification of international agreements and the creation of permanent government structures related to environmental management and economic planning.

This year’s World Environment Day theme is “Beat Plastic Pollution.” It is estimated that every year more than 400 million tonnes of plastic are produced worldwide, but less than 10% of this material is recycled. Plastic waste, especially microplastics, ends up contaminating food, water, and air, threatening human health and biodiversity.

It is essential for governments, the private sector, and other stakeholders to take advantage of scientific advances and existing solutions to address the problem of plastic pollution. The celebration of World Environment Day is a reminder of the importance of taking transformative environmental actions in all corners of the world.

In Herencia, the green lighting of the windmills is a reminder of the community’s commitment to protecting the environment and a call to action for all its citizens.
