A journey through art and history - Herencia (Ciudad Real) Spain

A journey through art and history

Within the framework of FITUR, the International Tourism Fair held in Madrid from January 24 to 28, Herencia, an emblematic town in the La Mancha region, is advancing in its consolidation as a quality tourist destination. This year, Herencia stands out with the presentation of its ‘Herencia Barroca’ route, a journey that will allow visitors to discover sets of baroque mural paintings, recently restored and of invaluable heritage value.

A Journey through Baroque Art
The ‘Herencia Barroca’ route invites you to explore three key spaces in the town. It begins at the hermitage of ‘la Labradora’, dated in 1760, where visitors can admire its semi-spherical dome adorned with the litany of the Virgin. The journey continues in the Cloister of La Merced, founded in 1656 by Juan José de Austria. This cloister, which currently houses the permanent exhibition of the National Painting Contest and a historical photographic collection, offers a unique blend of art and heritage. The journey culminates in the Chapel of the Santísimo of the Church of the Immaculate Conception, where a monumental 18th-century pictorial work, recently restored, can be admired.

A Monumental Restoration Project
The restoration of these baroque works, especially in the Chapel of the Santísimo, has been one of the main investments of the Herencia City Council in the recovery of its heritage. The interventions have brought to light a complex iconographic program hidden for decades under layers of paint, thus revealing the artistic richness that the town has preserved over the years.

An Enriching Experience
In addition to visits to these artistic treasures, the route will include musical performances and theatrical interludes, all inspired by the baroque style of the exhibited artworks. This combination of art, music, and theater promises to offer a unique and enriching tourist experience.

Tourist Information and Promotion
As reported by the Heritage councilor, Mª Eugenia Díaz-Pacheco, all information about the route will be available soon on the official Tourism website of Herencia. The ‘Herencia Barroca’ route not only highlights the cultural richness of the town but also contributes to the tourist dynamization of the entire La Mancha region.

A Commitment to Heritage and Tourism Quality
In the words of Díaz-Pacheco, “this route is a reflection of the artistic heritage of Herencia and a firm commitment to tourist dynamization.” This initiative positions Herencia as a destination synonymous with quality in its tourist offer, with a focus on heritage and culture. The presentation of the route at FITUR, with the participation of Mayor Sergio García-Navas, emphasizes the importance of Herencia in the regional and national tourism landscape.
