Elena Tajuelo, a champion in Spain for Slalom in a wheelchair, hails from Herencia.

Last weekend, the Herencian athlete Elena Tajuelo Corrales shone at the National Slalom Championship held in Getafe, once again demonstrating her skill and prowess. Tajuelo won gold in two of the championship events, the timed race and the elimination race, in the women’s WS3 category. Her impressive performance led her to compete in the Champion of Champions race, where she was only 24 hundredths of a second away from advancing to the final.

The Spanish Wheelchair Slalom Championship was held on June 10th and 11th at the Municipal Fernando Mogena Pavilion in Getafe. The event was organized by the Spanish Federation of Sports for People with Cerebral Palsy and Acquired Brain Damage (FEDPC) and the Federation of Sports for People with Physical Disabilities (FEDDF), with the collaboration of the Madrid Federation of Sports for Cerebral Palsy and Acquired Brain Damage. In total, 42 athletes faced a challenging circuit full of obstacles that they had to navigate in the shortest possible time.

According to national selector Carmen Domínguez, “the sport continues to grow, which is why this year the competition format is changing. The fixed circuit will not be performed, therefore the timed race will be the sum of the two times of a variable circuit chosen the day before by lot.” This new format brought an extra dose of excitement and uncertainty to the competition. However, Tajuelo’s skill and speed enabled her to overcome these challenges, resulting in a remarkable success.

Dominguez concluded by expressing her enthusiasm for the sport’s continuous growth: “I am eager to be back in a pavilion enjoying this wonderful sport, reconnecting with the veterans and welcoming the future of this sport. I hope to see many Spanish records, because that will mean that little by little the sport is becoming more competitive and exciting.”

We congratulate Elena Tajuelo on her outstanding performance at the National Slalom Championship, a true testament to her talent, determination, and dedication to the sport. Her success not only represents Herencia well but also inspires other disabled athletes to pursue their dreams in sports. Furthermore, Tajuelo received the Inclusion in Sports Award at the IV Night of Sports in Herencia a few days ago and shared some words with the attendees.
