Herencia commemorates Europe Day by lighting up the windmills blue.

Today, May 9th, Europe Day is being celebrated, an occasion that Herencia City Council has decided to commemorate in a special way. In honor of this date, the town’s 7 windmills, which have recently been fitted with new lighting, will be illuminated in blue.

Europe Day is celebrated to remember the Schuman Declaration, a speech given by Robert Schuman, French Minister of Foreign Affairs, on May 9th, 1950. In it, Schuman proposed a new form of political cooperation for Europe, with the aim of avoiding another war like the two major world conflicts that had devastated it in the first half of the 20th century.

This proposal is considered the cornerstone of what would later become the European Union. Therefore, May 9th is a date of great importance for the countries that are part of this union, and it is celebrated with various activities and events throughout Europe.

From Herencia, the importance of this date and of European unity is emphasized by illuminating their emblematic windmills in blue. This symbolic gesture serves to remind all citizens of the importance of cooperation and union between countries, and the contribution of the European Union to peace and prosperity on the continent.
