This past Sunday, the Municipal Cemetery of Herencia was the setting for a guided tour on the occasion of the Feast of All Saints, which brought together numerous residents interested in learning about the history and cultural heritage of this space. The activity, organized by the Tourism and Cemetery departments, was led by local historian Claro Manuel Fernández-Caballero, who offered a unique and detailed interpretation of the cemetery, highlighting its cultural, historical, and artistic significance.
Under the guidance of Fernández-Caballero, attendees were able to immerse themselves in the history of the different burial sites in the municipality, from the early cemeteries to the current one. Throughout the tour, the historian explained the evolution of symbols and funerary iconography that adorn the graves, and recounted anecdotes and curiosities surrounding this meaningful space. Highlights of the visit included the tombs of prominent figures from the community and an exploration of the architectural and landscape changes that the cemetery has undergone over its more than one hundred years of history.
A journey through time and funerary culture with the guidance of an expert
Fernández-Caballero shared unique details about the cemetery with attendees, such as the history of the oldest person buried on the grounds, the total number of graves, and the largest and most significant sculpture in the location. He also highlighted some curious epitaphs, which provide a different perspective on local funeral tradition and culture. Thanks to the historian’s experience and knowledge, the visit became an open lesson in history and heritage that sparked the interest of residents.
This initiative is not new, as last year, on the occasion of the cemetery’s centenary, similar visits were conducted that were very well received. This year, around the Feast of All Saints, the organizing departments decided to resume the activity to continue offering citizens the opportunity to discover the cemetery from a cultural and educational perspective.
A farewell with a taste of tradition
The day concluded with a tasting of typical sweets of the holiday: attendees enjoyed fritters and marzipan sweets, accompanied by a glass of sweet wine, putting a traditional touch on an enriching experience in both historical and gastronomic aspects. This closure added a traditional touch to a visit that not only allowed participants to learn about their local history but also to relive the traditions of All Saints’ Day.
The success of this guided activity by Claro Manuel Fernández-Caballero, a highly recognized historian in the community, encourages the departments to consider consolidating this visit as an annual event, turning the Municipal Cemetery into a meeting point with the past and a cultural reference for the municipality.
