Orange Alert for High Temperatures: Civil Protection Recommendations

The State Meteorological Agency has issued an orange alert for high temperatures for tomorrow, Friday, July 20, between 13:00 and 21:00 in Alcázar de San Juan and its surroundings. Temperatures are expected to reach 40ºC due to a high pressure system at medium and high levels located in Algeria, which has intensified a mass of warm and dry air over the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands.

In response to this situation, Civil Protection of Alcázar de San Juan and Herencia has issued a series of recommendations for the population to protect themselves from the effects of extreme heat and prevent risky situations.

Self-Protection Measures:
Limit sun exposure: It is essential to stay in shaded areas as much as possible and keep them well ventilated. High temperatures can cause heat strokes and other health problems.
Avoid sudden changes in temperature: When entering or leaving air-conditioned places, be aware that these changes can affect your health. It is important to gradually acclimate to the outdoor temperature.
Consume light and regular meals: Opt for foods and beverages rich in water and minerals, such as fruits and vegetables, to replenish lost salts due to sweating. Staying hydrated is essential to prevent dehydration.
Wear appropriate clothing: Use light-colored clothing that covers most of the body, especially the head. Light colors reflect sunlight and help keep the body cooler.
Avoid prolonged physical exercises: During the hottest hours of the day, it is advisable to avoid intense physical activities. Physical exertion in extreme heat conditions can be dangerous.
Take care of vulnerable individuals: Check on elderly and sick people who live alone or in isolation. These individuals are particularly vulnerable to the effects of heat and may need additional assistance.
Do not leave children or elderly individuals in closed vehicles: Never leave children or elderly individuals inside a closed car, as temperatures can rise rapidly and endanger their lives.

Fire Prevention:
High temperatures also increase the risk of forest fires. Therefore, the following precautions should be followed:
Do not light fires: Avoid lighting fires in the mountains and nearby areas. Fires can spread rapidly in extreme heat conditions.
Caution with flammable materials: Pay attention to burning stubble, lit cigarettes, garbage, and especially glass bottles, which can act as a magnifying glass and cause fires.
Know the terrain in case of fire: If you enter the mountains, make sure to know the terrain and communication routes well. This is crucial in order to evacuate quickly if necessary.
Camp in authorized areas: These areas have fire protection measures and facilitate evacuation if necessary. Camping in unauthorized areas can be dangerous.
Take action when a fire starts: If you discover a fire, alert emergency services by calling 112 and try to extinguish it using green branches or by stomping on the base of the flames. If you cannot control it, move away from the area.

Civil Protection will be monitoring the situation continuously and will update information through its social networks on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. It is essential to stay informed and follow recommendations to ensure everyone’s safety.
