The aesthetic and cultural renewal has reached the city center through the installation of new road signs that not only fulfill their informative function but also add historical and artistic value to the streets. 46 ceramic mosaics have been installed in 29 roads and squares in the historic center, designed by the renowned artist Antonio Plaza and produced by the company Alfarería Peño. This initiative is part of the Plan to Beautify Public Spaces and aims to replace the most worn-out and old signage with ones that unify the design and tell the history of the spaces they name.
Mayor Sergio García-Navas and Heritage Councillor Mª Eugenia Díaz-Pacheco have personally inspected the finished work and collected the first impressions of the residents. The residents have been the first to contemplate the new image offered by the main streets, hermitages, and significant corners of the town. The idea for this project arose within the Local Heritage and Urbanism Council and materialized after a competition that saw the participation of several local artists.
The project has also had the collaboration of the Local History Workshop of the Popular University, responsible for the selection of texts and images accompanying each plaque. Each of the new mosaics not only highlights the name of the place but also includes an illustration or symbol representative of it, as well as its historical denomination.
This initiative, led by the Tourism and Heritage department, seeks not only the visual renewal of these elements but also the promotion of tourist attraction, enhancing the points of interest in the municipality. The Heritage Councillor has emphasized the importance of this project, stating that: “Herencia grows tourism-wise and it is essential to be prepared to show the best of ourselves to visitors. Taking care and valuing the town center is a priority and these new road signs are a display of our rich identity and an unparalleled introduction to our town.”
