Sale of Easter pies and chocolate bars at the Carrasco Alcalde School.

Today, April 25th, the town of Herencia celebrates the traditional festival of San Marcos, which marks the transition from winter to spring and brings the community together for the tasting of hornazo, a sweet brioche bun containing one or more boiled eggs.

This primitive festival, originating from many towns in La Mancha, is an occasion to remember ancient customs and keep local traditions alive. The Parents Association (AMPA) Carrasco Alcalde in Herencia, in collaboration with the school management and teaching staff, has organized a voluntary activity at Carrasco Alcalde school to maintain the tradition of hornazo in the town.

During the celebration, hornazos and chocolates will be sold for €1 for all students who want to participate in this voluntary activity. The response from families has been very positive, which has allowed the activity to be a success and for the tradition to be passed on to new generations.

The custom of cracking boiled eggs on the foreheads of unsuspecting people who were unaware of someone approaching with their hand hidden behind their back is one of the most picturesque and entertaining practices of this celebration.

The educational community of Herencia thanks all families and teachers for their participation and collaboration in celebrating the tradition of the Hornazo de San Marcos, demonstrating that keeping local customs alive is fundamental to preserving cultural richness and a sense of belonging in our society. Take advantage of this opportunity to enjoy the delicious hornazos and chocolates, while we celebrate our traditions together as a community.
