The Cementerio de Herencia celebrates a century of history with guided visits.

The upcoming All Saints’ Day is expected to be special in our locality. The Herencia cemetery, which celebrates its 100th anniversary since its first burial in April 1923, will open its doors for guided tours to discover the secrets, stories, and corners of this iconic and heritage site.

As a prelude to the festivities, the City Council is carrying out various improvements to the facilities, such as painting walls and common areas. In addition, in response to citizens’ requests and in line with the municipality’s commitment to enhance public services, a mobile staircase with a platform and wheels has been incorporated. This tool will facilitate and make access to the niches easier and safer, particularly those located in higher areas.

Inmaculada Ortega, councilor for the area, along with Mayor Sergio García-Navas, highlighted during a recent visit that these interventions are a direct response to the demands of the residents, offering a more comfortable and accessible service.

But the real protagonist will be the past and history of the cemetery. The scheduled guided tours will provide a unique perspective on the cultural and historical heritage of the cemetery. In addition to the current cemetery, visitors will learn about the municipality’s previous burial spaces, as well as the symbology, funerary iconography, and numerous curiosities surrounding these sites. Special emphasis will be placed on the architectural and landscape evolution of the place, reflecting artistic and stylistic changes throughout its centenary.

The sessions are scheduled for Saturday, November 4th at 4:30 PM and Sunday, November 5th at 12:00 PM, both starting from the main entrance of the cemetery. Tickets to participate in these visits will be available from Monday, October 30th at 9:00 AM on the city council’s website, with a limit of 4 tickets per person.

A unique opportunity to delve into the history and heritage, in many cases unknown, of Herencia, discovering in every corner a piece of the collective memory of the locality. Don’t miss this journey through time!
