August has brought with it the long-awaited start of the 2023 grape harvest in the main vineyard areas of La Mancha. Tomelloso, Campo de Criptana, Herencia, Alcázar de San Juan, Villarrobledo, Villarrubia de los Ojos, San Clemente, El Provencio, Corral de Almaguer, and Arenales de San Gregorio are already in full swing, demonstrating an early start to the harvest.
Teodomiro Carrero Gallego, from Viveros Ferca and Bodegas Ferca, stated that this year the heat has triggered an early start. “The grape harvest machines were put into action on the night of August 11th,” he mentioned.
Localities in Motion
Albacete has taken the lead with wineries in Villarrobledo already harvesting grapes since August 4th. The grapes are reported to be in a healthy state, with an average degree of 13? and a pH of 3.2.
City Real stands out with activity in places such as Alcázar de San Juan, Campo de Criptana, and Arenales de San Gregorio. Felipe Rodríguez, president of Bodegas Yuntero, emphasized the rush to harvest due to the heatwave, but highlighting the high quality of the fruit.
Tomelloso is also not left behind with its representative, Fernando Villena, confirming the harvesting of the Sauvignon Blanc variety.
In Cuenca, San Clemente and El Provencio also show an active start to the season with their wineries Puente de Rus and Campos Reales, respectively.
Finally, in Toledo, places like Corral de Almaguer already have their wineries in full harvest mode.
Cencibel Advances; Airén Awaits
Although Cencibel or Tempranillo shows an early start in places like Campo de Criptana and Arenales de San Gregorio, the iconic white grape variety Airén will wait until September for its harvest, maintaining its characteristic rhythm.
