A charity wine tasting event was held on Sunday, organized by the Diputación of Ciudad Real under the program “The culture of wine”. This activity aims to highlight the quality of local wines, and on this occasion, also aims to raise funds for the Phelan-McDermid Syndrome Association, to which the family of little Marco, a resident of Herencia, belongs.
The event was attended by the mayor, Sergio García Navas, accompanied by the other council members, Amparo Bremard, provincial delegate for water, agriculture and rural development, Gonzalo Redondo, vice president of the diputación, and the family representative of Phelan-McDermid Syndrome Association.
The money raised from ticket sales will be donated to the aforementioned association, which works to support those affected by Phelan-McDermid Syndrome and their families. This underdiagnosed genetic disorder manifests through a series of symptoms, such as various degrees of intellectual disability, absence or delay in speech, and symptoms of autism or Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Diagnosis of Phelan-McDermid Syndrome is performed through various genetic tests, such as microarray (DNA chip), chromosome analysis (karyotype), or fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH). While deletions, rings, translocations, and mutations can be detected in blood samples, tests can also be performed on skin cells or cells used for prenatal testing.
Today’s wine tasting event was an excellent opportunity to support the Phelan-McDermid Syndrome Association and promote the culture of wine in the Ciudad Real region. Furthermore, this type of event raises awareness about rare diseases like Phelan-McDermid Syndrome and provides support to families affected by these conditions.
