A tribute to cheese and shepherding - Herencia (Ciudad Real) Spain

A tribute to cheese and shepherding

Herencia could not miss its appointment with FITUR 2025, the most important international tourism fair, and this year it stands out by highlighting two great commemorations that mark its essence as a town: the International Cheese Day and the Shepherd’s Day. The town will present its offer on January 25, at the Castilla-La Mancha Tourism stand, during the day dedicated to the province of Ciudad Real.

The municipality will take this opportunity to invite all visitors to discover Quhesalia, the Cheese Interpretation Center, an innovative space that pays homage to the region’s agri-food traditions and has become a must-visit place for tourists from all over the country.

A 2025 marked by the tradition of cheese: International Cheese Day

The International Cheese Day, scheduled for March 29 and 30, will be a unique opportunity to celebrate the cultural and gastronomic value of this emblematic product. Herencia, with its five renowned local cheese factories, stands out as a reference in the production of quality manchego cheese, a craft that is part of its century-old tradition.

During these days, visitors will be able to enjoy activities designed to connect with cheese in a unique way:

  • Guided tours to local cheese factories, where they will learn everything about the care and passion involved in the production of manchego cheese, from milking to the final result.
  • Cheese Tasting Introduction Course, a workshop in which experts and beginners can discover and analyze the organoleptic qualities of this product, such as its texture, aroma, and flavor, enhancing the sensory experience of cheese.

Shepherding as a symbol of identity: Shepherd’s Day

The Shepherd’s Day, to be celebrated on June 28 and 29, aims to preserve and raise awareness of the shepherding profession, one of the most deeply rooted traditions in Herencia. During these days, various activities designed for all audiences will be carried out, combining learning, enjoyment, and homage to a way of life that has been a fundamental pillar of local development.

Among the planned activities are:

  • Children’s Workshops on Cheese Making, where the little ones will have the opportunity to learn how to make their own cheese while discovering the importance of the shepherding profession.
  • Commented Night Cheese Tasting, an experience designed for adults, which will combine manchego cheese tasting with pairings of local wines and agri-food products from the region, creating a magical environment where gastronomy and tradition come together.

Quhesalia: The heart of the events

Both events will take place at Quhesalia, the Herencia Cheese Interpretation Center. This space, conceived as a tribute to the shepherding profession and the cheese legacy, is a meeting point between the town’s past and present. Throughout the year, Quhesalia attracts numerous visitors interested in discovering the history, production techniques, and importance of cheese in the local economy and culture.

With interactive exhibitions and thematic activities, Quhesalia is not only a museum but also a place to experience gastronomic and cultural experiences that connect visitors with the soul of Herencia.

Commitment to tourism and roots

Maria Eugenia Díaz-Pacheco Galán, Councilor for Tourism, highlighted the importance of FITUR in showcasing the cultural and gastronomic richness of Herencia: «Showing our roots and traditions makes us unique. Through activities like the ones we are presenting, we not only invite tourists to get to know us, but we also offer them authentic experiences that connect with our emotions and our history».

Herencia continues to bet on tourism as a driving force for development, highlighting its strengths in agri-food, tradition, and innovation. With cheese and shepherding as central axes, FITUR 2025 will be an opportunity to reaffirm its role as a unique tourist destination in Castilla-La Mancha and on the national map.

Do not miss these two essential events in 2025, where tradition and gastronomy come together to offer an unforgettable experience.
