Herencia opens its ancient courtyards to the public to highlight its historical richness.

On the upcoming Monday, May 1st, some of the oldest and traditional patios in the municipality will open their doors to the public, thanks to agreements reached with three local families. These visits will allow people to get a closer look at the hidden heritage of the area, as was already done during the summer and at events during the past fair.

The tour will begin at the City Hall, from where visitors can visit the patio at Columbus Street 3, where the performance of the “Antonia the Maid” interlude will be represented. Next, the tour will continue to the patio at Carrasco Alcalde Street 13, where visitors can enjoy the theatrical play “The Carlist servant”. Finally, the patio at Tahona Street 8 will be the stage for the interlude “The Young Lady Goes to the Casino”. This activity will allow people to discover the town’s history and lesser-known heritage through historical houses that preserve the essence and secrets of years past.

This encounter is made possible thanks to the collaboration of the council and the Local Heritage Council, which have established agreements with the owners of these emblematic buildings, allowing residents and visitors to enjoy resources that were previously unknown. The City Hall has held different meetings with the owners and has established an economic aid that facilitates the opening, visiting, and enjoyment of these patios several times throughout the year.

The buildings visited have great heritage value. Columbus Street’s patio is a typical 18th-century courtyard from La Mancha and one of the oldest in Herencia, with a wooden corridor and railing supported by red sandstone columns. The Carrasco Alcalde Street’s patio preserves its original state from the 18th century with contributions from the 19th and early 20th centuries and has an upper gallery closed off with large windows. Lastly, Tahona Street’s patio is a typical Herencia patio built at the beginning of the 20th century, with stylized columns, capitals, and art deco decor typical of that era.
