The Hermitage of the Christ of Mercy is in the midst of a rehabilitation process.

Inheritance is witnessing the progress of a groundbreaking project for the preservation of its cultural and religious heritage. The Hermitage of the Christ of Mercy, an emblematic building dating back to 1575 and housing the venerated image of the Christ of Mercy, the oldest in the locality since 1677, is undergoing significant renovation work.

This Tuesday, the project received a visit from local and regional authorities, including the Director General of Rural Development, José Juan Fernández Zarco; the mayor Sergio García-Navas; the president of the Mancha Norte group, Alberto Lara; the parish priest Alberto Domínguez, and the president of the Brotherhood of the Christ of Mercy, Rosa García-Navas. All of them, accompanied by the project’s management team, were able to verify the good pace at which the works are progressing.

This ambitious project has been made possible by 80% financing with European funds, managed by the Mancha Norte Local Action Group: Development and Innovation, whose objective is the preservation of the region’s cultural heritage. The parish and the brotherhood have contributed to the remaining funding equally, demonstrating the community’s commitment to the conservation of this important legacy.

The renovation works include a series of essential interventions such as repairing facades, improving waterproofing to prevent leaks and dampness, and updating electrical and public address systems. Furthermore, efforts are being made to improve the building’s accessibility and to conserve and restore the existing altarpieces, both in the background of the main nave and in the side chapels.

The mayor Sergio García-Navas has highlighted the collaboration between different administrations as key to the completion of this project, which will not only rehabilitate a historic building but also revitalize one of the city’s most traditional neighborhoods. This project will coincide with the construction of the new Health Center, which will involve a complete modernization of the surrounding urban space.

For his part, the Director General of Rural Development, José Juan Fernández, has emphasized the importance of Rural Development Groups in the preservation of heritage and has praised the high level of project implementation in the region. Fernández has also recognized the mayor García-Navas’s proactive stance in seeking funding for local development and supporting entrepreneurs in Inheritance.

The Hermitage of the Christ of Mercy is an architectural gem that reflects the rich history and religious devotion of Inheritance. Its restoration is a testament to the joint effort to protect and value the historical, cultural, and religious heritage, ensuring its transmission to future generations.
